- CIS wins Microsoft Research Grant, Monday, March 06, 2006
Professor Rei Safavi-Naini and her research team from the Centre for Information Security have won a Microsoft Research Asia grant worth over $20,000 to fund cutting-edge research into building tougher security for online transactions such as online banking. The University of Wollongong will provide matching funds to increase the support for the research
It is the first time a research team from a regional university has won the grant and Professor Safavi-Naini is the first-ever Australian winner of a security-funding research grant. Team members include Associate Professor Willy Susilo, Associate Professor Yi Mu, Dr Jeffrey Horton, Dr Joonsang Baek and Dr Wanqing Li.
Senior researchers at the Microsoft Research Asia Labs in Beijing have now invited Professor Safavi-Naini to present the proposed research project at a regional workshop to be held in China this month involving over 200 Asia-Pacific professors.

A RILE research team headed by Associate Professor Tony Herrington won a grant of $30,000 from the NSW Department of Education and Training (DET) to investigate the impact and transfer of knowledge of teachers who participated in an online ICT professional development program. The team (Dr Tony Herrington, Dr Jan Herrington, Dr Garry Hoban and Dr Sue Bennett) will seek to establish the critical factors for teacher engagement and success in integrating ICT-based practice in schools.
The research study is to further understanding of how teachers engagement with the 'Integrating ICT into teaching and learning' online modules affects their willingness and capacity to integrate ICT into their teaching practice.
The research will employ a multiple case study approach to address the following questions:
- What are the challenges and consequences for teachers when they transfer professional learning into practice?
- What are the conditions that support teachers to expand the use of ICT in their teaching and professional learning?
- What is the impact of teacher professional learning on student ICT experiences?
- Photonic and Electronic Signal Processing Group, Tuesday, March 29, 2005
Dr Enbang Li had an article published in the February 2005 issue of Laser Focus World Magazine on “The optical phase shifting with acoustic-optic devices” developed by the Photonic and Electronic Signal Processing Group, TITR, and partner in the Opto-electronics National Key Lab at Tianjin University, China.
Dr Enbang Li’s presentation on 18 March as part of TITR seminar series, covered the basics of fiber Bragg grating technology and its applications in both optical communications and optical fiber sensing areas. Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) has become a hot topic in photonics research in recent years.
