Title:
Networking Research @Cork - Wireless Sensor Nets and Other Things

Presenter:
Professor Cormac J. Sreenan

Date:
April 29, 2005

Abstract:
In this talk I will give an overview of the Mobile & Internet Systems Lab at University College Cork in Ireland. We work on content distribution for Streaming media, handover in heterogeneous wireless networks, and wireless sensor Networks (WSNs). This talk will mainly address our work on WSNs.

WSNs are composed of large numbers of autonomous nodes equipped with modest computing, storage and communication resources, and endowed with ability to sense their environment and communicate with other nearby nodes. They present many research challenges and have recently attracted significant international research attention. I will outline some of the challenges we find interesting and describe current projects including our D-Systems node and early results from our proposal to make protocols "maintenance-aware".

Bio:

Cormac J. Sreenan is a Professor of Computer Science at University College Cork (UCC) in Ireland and a Visiting Professor at CSE-UNSW for all of 2005, hosted by Sanjay Jha. At UCC he was Head of Department from 2000-2004, so after that they figured he had earned an early sabbatical somewhere far away and sunny! Prior to joining UCC in 1999 he was a researcher at AT&T (Bell) Labs in New Jersey USA. His PhD is from the Univ of Cambridge and his research interests are in networking and systems, especially wireless and sensor networking.
