- Abstract:
- People in remote communities generally have poor communications infrastructures. For example, almost half the remote communities (i.e. 50 people or less) in desert Australia have no voice services. TITR has recently become involved in the Desert Knowledge CRC, which has improving remote communitiy communications facilities as a key aim. This talk will outline TITR work underway within the CRC to provide data services for remote communities over Digital TV channels.
The talk will begin by reviewing relevant Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) standards, in particular those providing return paths for interactive services. The Optus satellite network, which underpins Digital TV (DTV) services in desert Australia will be outlined, along with the services provided by Imparja, the key indigenous TV provider in Australia and a partner in the project proposed by TITR within the CRC.
Potential research directions in data service delivery over DTV infrastructure will then be described. A principle focus will be strategies for effective use of the relatively limited bandwidth available within the Australian satellite network.
