Title:
Intelligent Environment

Presenter:
Stephen Davis

Date:
October 18, 2002

Abstract:
MPEG-21 introduces the idea of adapting multimedia content depending on things such as terminal capabilities, surrounding environment, user's preferences etc. It proposes using a set of XML descriptors to describe all these attributes. Due to the complexities of dynamic environments and terminal capabilities, a large number of descriptors will be needed. However, depending on different scenarios, or the users context, not all of these descriptors will be needed. The idea of using Intelligent Agents to generate a reduced set of descriptors could save on bandwidth, processing power, and improve the way users interact with multimedia. The Intelligent Agents would have learning capabilities, context and environment awareness to make these decisions without any user intervention.
