Title:
An introduction to constraint programming and its applications.

Presenter:
Aditya Ghose

Date:
April 18, 2002

Abstract:
Constraint programming involves a relatively new class of robust techniques for solving feasibility and optimization problems that has generated considerable industry interest. In this talk, I will provide a quick introduction followed by a more detailed discussion of some interesting basic and applied research questions. In particular, I will focus on recent advances in solving over-constrained problems and how these can lead to a new class of robust constraint solvers. I will also talk about some industry-scale tools we have built, in domains such as production scheduling and supply chain optimization. Time/resources permitting, there will be a brief demo of one of these tools at the end of the talk.
